Peabody, MA
Green provided traffic, roadway, and landscape design services to the City of Peabody Community Development and Planning Department for the Main Street Corridor Realignment Project. The project implemented various traffic-calming and pedestrian safety measures to improve the overall safety of the project corridor for pedestrians and vehicles. Safety and traffic flow improvements include reducing the roadway from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction with a center left-turn lane; design of “bump-outs” and accented crosswalks to reduce speeds and increase pedestrian safety; and signal improvements at Peabody Square, Washington Street, and Howley Street to offset the lane reductions. In essence, the 2,600-foot section of street was transformed into a Complete Street.
In addition to functional improvements, the project incorporated street and landscape elements, which helped establish a positive image for Main Street. For maintenance and accessibility, the sidewalks are concrete accented with a strip of pavers at the curb line. Unit paver crosswalks also provide an aesthetic and functional detail. The project included extensive community outreach and coordination with the various City departments to help develop a design that met the concerns and needs of many stakeholders.
