North Kingston, RI
As part of RIDOT’s 1R Highway Improvement Program, Green was tasked with designing improvements to Route 138 in North Kingstown. Traffic management was a sensitive design element due to the project location and the area that Route 138 serves. We worked closely with RIDOT to develop the Maintenance and Protection of Traffic strategies and plans that minimized construction impacts to road users. Strategies included night time paving, rolling road blocks and the development of detailed traffic management plans with advanced messaging along Route 1A, Route 1, and others to divert traffic around the project area during construction.
The improvements were implemented along a four-lane divided Limited Access Expressway that carries approximately 31,000 vehicles per day. The project extends from the western end of the Route 1/Route 138 interchange east to the western end of the Jamestown Bridge for an approximate length of 2.8 miles along Route 138, 1.0 mile along the Route 1A on and off-ramps, and a portion of the fishing pier access road (up to the existing fenced gate) near the Jamestown Bridge.
